My farm is truly blessed © Kathy Ralph 2011 Stable Cat on the other hand has never hunted anything. Maybe he's too fat? He's 9.6kilos!! Hence the nickname Big Cat. His story is a little different. He was also an abandoned cat, but he was abandoned when he was fully grown and after experiencing a life with humans, I would prefer to refer to them as inhuman. His home was under an abandoned car at the property where I used to keep my horses before I moved to the country. The people who owned the property had two large and vicious dogs, who obviously didn't like cats! One morning I was feeding my horses, I had slept in and was already running an hour late for work. I looked across at the abandoned car and saw this very malnourished and timid cat put his head out from under the grill. I went to the house and asked if the people now had a cat. The answer was a very definite "No." I jumped in my ute, drove to the nearest petrol station and purchased some cat food and some milk. Returning to the property I attempted to coax the cat. It didn't work, so I left the food in the stable and raced off to work. Upon my return that evening the food was gone. So I repeated the process for the next few days. Always the food was gone. Either the rats had it or the cat! Around a week later the cat was getting more courageous and waiting for me. Upon my arrival he would make a run from the old car to the stables. Up to this point I had not realised how difficult it was for him to get to the food I had left for him. As he tentatively crept from under the abandoned car the dogs would make a run from the house. He had to sprint to the safety of the stable fence in order to escape being ripped apart by two ferocious dogs! Thus reaching safety he would be able to eat, then of course the whole process would be repeated on his return. Once under the old car he would have to tolerate the growling and threats of the dogs until they tired and retreated to the house. Then finally the threat would abate peace would come and he could curl up for the night. Stable Cat/Big Cat Big Cat dreaming
