Step 7 Encourage your child to choose new books on their own. Instead of heading straight to the toy department when shopping go straight to the book department. While you browse and show an interest in the books for adults, encourage your child to take a look at the children's books. Give them time to browse and choose a book that they like for themselves. Step 8 Take your child to the library One can gain a complete education from the library and it's free! Let your child join the library. Having their own library card will offer a sense of independence as well as the added responsibility of returning the books on time. In addition belonging to the library gives your child freedom of choice. It is most important that they pick books they personally like. Visit the library frequently. Make it a treat. Let them choose. Never tell them a book is too hard or too easy. Reading is the staircase that leads to literacy and education. 10
